Joking aside- 5 more ways to provide smiles in your Best Man speech

Loyal readers and indeed new ones will no doubt know the importance of including some funny Best Man jokes and one-liners in your Best Man speech, there are however other methods of ensuring beaming smiles and loud applause greet your Best Man speech.

1. Do the unexpected

Wedding guests love nothing more than the unexpected from a Best Man speech as they will have been to countless weddings themselves and witnessed the same old routines. Everyone expects the respective mothers to get lovely bouquets of flowers, however no one expects the father’s of the Bride and Groom to get anything so produce a gift for them, a bottle of champagne would be an ideal gift.

2.Don’t be afraid to show emotion

The ability to show some emotion whilst giving a Best Man speech is an excellent quality. Guests expect the Best Man to tell wisecrack after wisecrack they don’t expect him to say how proud he is of the Groom, or how he loves the Groom or how standing up giving the speech means so much to him. Showing emotion and humility will endear you to the guests more than any funny joke could.

3.Praise the parents of the Bride and Groom

It sounds simple but is often overlooked, you of course will compliment the Bride which is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser but also praise the Bride and Groom’s parents. As Best Man it stands to reason that you may know the Groom’s parents better but make sure you also compliment the Bride’s parents. When complimenting the Bride’s parents you could say “Upon meeting Sarah’s parents it was not difficult to understand where she got her manners, charm and good-nature from, they are wonderful people.”

4. Give the Groomsmen a mention

Showing a bit of humility goes a long way, particularly, when the Groomsmen have family attending the wedding. Announce how proud you are to be Best Man but that it is a title you share equally with the Groomsmen and finish by saying something like “for all their qualities I must warn you that the Groomsmen are the worst dancers in the world so keep your distance from them on the dancefloor.”

5. Give the Pageboy and Flowergirl a gift

When giving your speech ask the Pageboy and Flowergirl to join you at the top table, say some complimentary words about them and produce a gift for them. They may have already received a gift from previous speakers but irrespective, present them with a gift on behalf of yourself and the Groomsmen.

Using these ideas, along with a few jokes and sticking to the format of a Best Man speech will ensure that your speech goes down a treat. You should be relishing the thought of giving your Best Man speech and rightfully expect a deserved ovation once your speech ends.
