5 Tips To Help You Deliver A Best Man Speech With Style.

All too often Best Men can get so worked-up worrying about what to say in a Best Man speech that they overlook the importance of delivering it. Delivering the speech is crucial for wedding speeches but particularly for the Best Man given the weight of expectation on his shoulders.

Delivering the speech means much more than just uttering the words it means inserting your personality into it, and speaking with charm and confidence as you set the scene on the Big Day. Having great Best Man speeches is a huge advantage as your confidence will be sky-high allowing you to focus on the delivery aspects of the speech.

1. Stand tall with a large smile as you begin your speech.

You need the guests to believe you are confident and going to give a great speech so start by standing straight while scanning the width of the audience with a wide smile. Your smile will replicated by those you look at and gives you a nice boost before you have begun to speak.

2. Provide unexpected gifts.

Gift-giving at weddings is normal of course but you can lift the roof off the venue by saying something like “I know it is not traditional of the Best Man to give gifts but I could not let the speech go by without asking the Page Boy(for example) to come up to the top-table”, then provide a gift for him saying what a wonderful job he did and jokingly say that the Groomsmen wouldn’t have done such a great job without him.

3. Be aware of the subtle difference between confidence and cockiness.

As we know confidence is a wonderful asset to possess when it comes to being a Best Man, just ensure that your confidence doesn’t merge into cockiness though as this will alienate the listening guests.

4. Mention what it means for you to be Best Man.

Don’t be afraid to show emotion, talk about how honored you are and how much your friendship with the Groom means to you.

5. Express a personal dedicated toast of your own before the main Best Man toast.

As Best Man you have the privilege of providing the main toast at the end of your speech, however towards the end of the speech you can say something along the lines of “In a few moments we will be toasting the Bride and Groom but beforehand I personally want to wish them a gorgeous, loving wonderful life together, they are amazing people and on behalf of the Groomsmen and myself I wish them love, laughter, health and all the finest in life that they truly deserve.”

Irrespective of whether you plan to give a funny Best Man speech or take a more serious tone in your toast, either way, to make it memorable make sure to deliver it with style.

Recovery Lines For Best Man Speeches

Recovery Lines For Best Man Speeches

If in the unlikely event that your Best Man speech is not going down too well or worse if you forget your lines then you need to have a few recovery lines available to rescue the speech. While either scenario seems dreadful if you think on your feet then your speech will be rescued and confidence will be restored.

Scenario 1 – Joke is poorly-received

Rescue line – Look at the Groomsmen and say “thats the last time I’m using one of  your jokes again guys.”

Scenario 2 – You forget your lines

Rescue line -Take out a copy of your speech from your pocket, take a few seconds to compose yourself and then hold your speech up for all to see and say something witty like “as you can see I wasn’t expecting to speak today.”

Scenario 3- Someone heckles you.

Rescue line1- (if you know the person) “John I thought alcoholics were meant to be anonymous.”

Rescue line2- (if you dont know the person) “That’s okay pal, I remember my first beer too.”

Each of these scenarios are extremely unlikely but bear these examples in mind should you need to recover at any stage of your speech. My own great Best Man speeches (all 21 of them! ) continue to fly off the shelves, metaphorically speaking, and will ensure that you wont have to face any of the scenarios above.
