For the majority of people the honor of being asked to be Best Man is greeted with delight and a certain degree of privilege, then the realization hits home that the Best Man is expected to undertake many duties in this position with the task of giving a Best Man speech top of the agenda. The thoughts of speaking and entertaining a large audience is one of the biggest fears that a Best Man must overcome.

Once you have calmed down you will be asking yourself questions like;

  • - how long is the Best Man expected to speak?
  • - what does he say?
  • - who is he expected to thank during his speech?
  • - what other roles and duties are expected of the Best Man?
  • - how can the Best Man be funny without offending?

There are a myriad of other questions that a Best Man must try to find solutions to in order to do himself justice in the role so preparation is vital.

When it comes to preparing material to include in your speech the most important factor will be getting the wedding toast right. Your last words will have a huge impact on whether your speech is deemed a failure or a success. The example below for instance is a perfect way to wind down your speech and end on a high.

” I hope that John and Sarah have many years of lying, cheating and stealing ahead of them now that they are a married couple”, you will notice an expectant silence over the audience as they wait to hear what  you could possibly be saying next, then endear them forever to your hearts by saying….”Yes I hope they spend endless nights lying in each others arms, I hope with every morning they grab the opportunity to steal yet another kiss and may they forever cheat time and remain young at heart.”

The importance of a Best Man toast in the context of your overall speech cannot over-stated, it is vital to get this right as you do not want to give a great speech only to be let down with a limp toast at the end. No matter how funny a speech you plan on giving when it comes to the toast tone down on the humor and use it as a platform to inspire and delight in equal measures.
