No matter how much preparation you do delivering your Best Man speech to your bedroom mirror, nothing prepares you for the moment to finally deliver the real thing.
In all probability as you stand to give your speech you will hear polite applause from relatives and family friends along with loud whoops of expectancy from your own circle of friends, along with a final plea from the Groom to go easy on him. There may even be the odd shout of “get on with it” from those eager to get back to the sound of their own voices.
The reason I am outlining this is so that you don’t get distracted or allow your confidence to take a knock if you hear the odd grumble, they are normal so don’t worry about them.
As you look around the room you can relax in the knowledge that smiles will be greeting you in every corner of the room, so take a slow deliberate look and feed off the feel-good factor in the room. This is a great way of boosting your confidence so take a second to do so before beginning your speech.
If you are referring to notes, make sure you use index cards rather than plain paper as plain paper can more obviously display your nerves by constantly shaking.
As you utter your opening lines, take a look around the room as you do so, make eye-contact and engage the wedding-guests from the beginning, after your first couple of lines you will feel a surge of adrenalin that will give your confidence a further boost and allow you to continue on with your speech with a new-found confidence.
Giving a great Best Man speech can be a very rewarding and memorable experience, so prepare well and enjoy the plaudits afterwards.

As Spring dawns into Summer an increasing amount of Best Men will be nervously counting down the days to the Big Day and nervous about the thoughts of giving a Best Man speech. Though these nerves are normal, particularly for those of you who are not used to public-speaking, there is no need to worry as the wedding guests are out to enjoy themselves and to have a great day not to give the Best Man a hard time. By the time the Best Man gets to speak the feel-good factor in the room will sky-high with everyone willing you on.
Here are a few basics about a Best Man speech:
- should last between 2 to 5 minutes
- should include at least one embarrassing (yet family-friendly) story about the Groom.
- should compliment the Bride.
- should make reference to the Bride and Groom’s relationship (why they are the perfect match, how they met etc.)
- should thank the Groom for the honor of being Best Man and offer warm praise about your friendship.
- should include a couple of funny jokes, one-liners and quips ideally.
- should finish with an inspirational toast.
Funny Best Man speech jokes are essential, (ensure they are family-friendly) after all a Best Man toast is to be enjoyed and treasured for everyone, not just the Bride and Groom.
You should finish the main part of the speech, lavishing praise upon the Bride and Groom, the guests will be cheering on in approval setting up the perfect scene for you to deliver the Best Man toast wishing them well for the future.
Great Best Man speeches should be charming, witty, hilarious and complimentary so prepare well and look forward to a very rewarding occasion.
